Umami

Pasture-reared chickens

Umami, is one of the core five tastes including sweet, sour, bitter, and salty.

Umami means “essence of flavour” in Japanese, and its taste is often described as the meaty, savory deliciousness that deepens flavour.

On Biedouw farm Umami chickens get to live longer, fuller lives, allowing them to develop richer flavour profiles. With each extra day on our pasture, drinking rooibos, they accumulate more fat content, resulting in that signature Umami taste we love.

Pasture-raised lamb

Real pasture. Real flavour.
On our farm called Biedouw at the foot of the Cederberg our pasture-raised lamb is slowly grown on open fields, moved between grazing naturally on diverse grasses and the unique herbs and plants native to the land.

We focus on the regenerative approach that builds healthier soil, supports animal wellbeing, and produces meat that is clean, nutrient-dense, and full of real flavour.

The result is tender, beautifully balanced lamb you can trust — from our family farm to your table.

Biedouw farm

At the foot of the Cederberg is a farm called Biedouw,
home of Umami pasture-raised products —
no shortcuts, no cover-ups — just honest, authentic farming, full transparency, and food we’re proud to stand behind. This is the real deal — and we don’t chicken out on flavour.

Biedouw is a family-run farm, shaped by the land and a deep respect for how food should be raised. Here, animals are moved daily onto fresh pasture in a regenerative system that restores the soil and works in rhythm with nature.

Our chickens are raised for longer and drink rooibos tea, resulting in meat that’s naturally nutrient-dense and rich in true umami flavour.

From this land, and our family, to your table — food raised with purpose and pride.

We would love to have you part of our Umami and Biedouw family.

Send us a WhatsApp or leave us a message on Instagram and we will get in contact with you.
